Black Wolves Fall To Mammoth

Uncasville – Kevin Crowley had four goals and three assists and Stephan Leblanc collected his first hat trick with the New England Black Wolves, but it wasn’t enough as the Colorado Mammoth won 19-11 at Mohegan Sun Arena Sunday.

Colorado (5-3) broke a two-game losing streak while handing the Black Wolves (4-4) their third straight loss. New England gave up a season-high five power play goals, and was penalized 10 times for 30 minutes.

The Black Wolves were within 14-10 after Crowley scored his fourth goal of the game in the fifth minute of the fourth quarter. But the Mammoth struck for five goals in a span of just over five minutes to make it 19-10.

Kevin Buchanan scored the final goal of the game in the last minute.

Crowley ran his streak of games with at least one goal to 27, finishing with seven points overall while Shawn Evans had a pair of goals and four assists. Leblanc added an assist to finish with four points.

Stephan Keogh (four goals, three assists) led six Colorado players with multiple goals. Zack Greer (three goals, five assists) and Eli McLaughlin (three goals, one assist) posted hat tricks while Ryan Benesch (two goals, six assists), Jeremy Noble (two goals, four assists) and Jacob Ruest (two goals, one assist) all made key contributions.

Colorado led 4-0 just seven minutes into the game on goals by Brad Self, Noble, McLaughlin and Benesch. After Crowley scored with three minutes remaining in the first quarter, Colorado answered with power play goals by Benesch and Keogh to make it 6-1 after one quarter.

The second quarter belonged to New England, which scored six straight goals over a span of 12:40. Leblanc and Evans each scored twice while Crowley and Kyle Buchanan scored single goals as the Black Wolves rallied to take a 7-6 lead.

But Jeremy Noble and Zack Greer scored goals in the last 1:02 of the half to give the visitors an 8-7 lead at halftime. 

Colorado took control of the game in the third quarter, outscoring New England 5-2 to carry a 13-9 lead into the last 15 minutes. Twice in the quarter, the Mammoth struck for two goals in roughly a minute. McLaughlin and Chris Wardle scored goals 31 seconds apart in the third minute of the quarter while Greer and Keogh had goals in a span of 1:03 midway through the quarter.

The Black Wolves are at Vancouver next Saturday.
