TORONTO – Kevin Crowley scored the game-winner 2:08 into overtime and Aaron Bold had a career-high 51 saves as the New England Black Wolves defeated the Toronto Rock 8-7 on Sunday afternoon.
Crowley had three goals on the day for the first-place Black Wolves (6-4), who won their second consecutive overtime game. It was the eighth multiple-goal game this season for Crowley, who has six hat tricks and has scored in 29 straight games.
Kevin Buchanan had a season-high three goals and also had one assist while Stephan Leblanc (four assists) also had four points. Callum Crawford, acquired by New England last week, had one goal and two assists.
Rob Hellyer led the Rock (5-6) with five points on two goals and three assists while Brett Hickey (two goals) and Challen Rogers (one goal and one assist) each had two points for Toronto.
Hellyer got the scoring started just 28 seconds into the game, but the Black Wolves tied it up 7:08 into play on Buchanan’s first of the game. His second, just over two minutes later, was the 150th goal of his career, and he closed out the hat trick with 13 seconds to play in the quarter for his 400th career point.
Kyle Buchanan got in on the scoring action, finding the back of the net off a pass from Crawford with just one second remaining to put New England up 4-1 at the end of the quarter.
Hickey drew first blood for the Rock 5:51 into the second quarter to cut the Black Wolves advantage in half, but Crowley put New England back up three just one minute later. The two teams traded goals for the remainder of the half, with Rogers picking up one before Crawford scored his first goal in a Black Wolves uniform with 4:06 remaining in the half. Toronto closed out the half with a goal by Reid Reinholdt with 3.1 seconds to play. New England took a 6-4 lead into the break.
Brock Sorensen scored the only goal of the third quarter with 1:51 left to cut the Black Wolves lead down to 6-5, heading into the final quarter. Hellyer tied it at 6-6 with 4:38 to play, but Crowley scored 59 seconds later to give the Black Wolves back the lead. With 19 seconds remaining, Hickey picked up his second of the night to tie it at 7-7.
Both teams had scoring opportunities to open overtime, but Crowley eventually found the back of the net off a pass from Kyle Buchanan to secure the victory for New England.
