Joaquim Settling In With Black Wolves

Rookie Anthony Joaquim made his National Lacrosse League debut last Saturday at Saskatchewan. Selected by New England with the eighth overall pick in the 2017 NLL Entry Draft, Joaquim scooped up two loose balls in his time on the floor. He took some time this week to chat about the experience.

On his first NLL game experience last weekend in Saskatchewan
“It was good. It was exciting. The crowd was very into it. I was a little overwhelmed seeing all those people watching the game, it was definitely the biggest crowd I’ve every played in front of. But I thought it went well, the first couple of shifts I got my groove a little. Obviously the outcome wasn’t the greatest for us, but just room to improve. I thought we did ok, but there is obviously are areas we want to do better in, which we’ll focus on coming into this week’s game.”

On what he thinks he needs to improve on for the rest of the season
“I think the biggest thing for me is just being more confident in my abilities. That’s the big thing, confidence really, not feeling like you are a rookie. I have the abilities to play in this league, that’s why I was chosen, so just being confident in what I can do and doing it at a high level on a consistant basis. That’s really what it comes down to. Just having the confidence in my skills and stick work and doing it at 100 percent all the time.”

On his experience with the Black Wolves so far
“It’s been amazing. It’s a great group of guys that we have and I’ve been fortunate to enjoy every minute with them. From the management down, everything has been great. The guys have been very easy going and welcoming, making the transition very easy for me. I can’t ask for a better group. So far it’s been unreal and I wouldn’t change it for anything.”

On playing for the first time at Mohegan Sun Arena on Friday
“I’m excited for that. We came down for the home opener and even just watching it from the stands it was something that was crazy so playing is going to be 10 times better. I’m excited for that. I know what it’s like to play in front of a big crowd now so just harnessing that energy and focusing it toward the game is something I’m going to look to do. I’m just excited to play in front of our home fans.”
